Given it’s a live action/animation hybrid, I was expecting something along the lines of The Chipmunks Movies or Hop. Instead, it was slightly better than that. I know it’s an incredibly low bar and I’m not saying the movie is good, but I thought it was better than it had any right to be.

Yes, but the gargoyles had originated in 10th century Scotland, so it does make me question how they know modern English when Xanatos reawakens them. And how everyone else they encounter in other parts of the world also knows modern English.

I’d say that whole deal is the same as How to Train your Dragon with the Scottish grown-ups and the American teens; they needed to be more marketable to the target demo. On top of that, 10th-century languages, regardless of region, would be nigh-incomprehensible to modern ears. You know Grendel in the Zemeckis Beowulf movie ? Just imagine those characters talking like him and you’d get an idea of what kind of ordeal it’d be to sit through.

It’s impossible that the gargoyles world somehow be able to understand everything Xanatos, Elisa, etc. say, since they can from a thousand years ago. As far as I know, they never explain this in the plot. Maybe they’re banking on the idea that nobody would question it?

they also were blink and you’ll miss them not much else or something you’d still “it get” if you don’t know what they’re referencing. also a big factor here is that MLP is funny while TTG makes my want to stick my TV in a wood chipper with how smuggly passive aggressive it is to its audience.

It really comes down to how much you rely on references. If a show has no merits beyond reminding you of better entertainment, it’s terrible.

I get that, but TTG is nowhere near the extent of Seltzer and Friedberg in terms of leaning on references for humor; there are certainly bits and pieces where the show amused me beyond that perimeter.

The examples I used were far beyond “blink and you miss” in terms of presence, though granted they are capable of being “got” by people unaware of what’s being referenced. Also, letting referential humor slide simply because you have a bias toward one show over another isn’t a valid argument.
