Speaking of OTPs…

I was thinking about the seriousness of cartoons and connecting it to their individual dedication to continuity and detail, and for some reason I thought of a spectrum that has Spongebob on one end and Avatar on the other.

I think Simpsons is even more irreverent than Spongebob. It actively undermines its own continuity.

Spongebob has no overarching story and has entire swaths of seasons not worth revisiting in its long runtime, but it practically materializes money from the aether and is known the world over.
 
Avatar has a story to tell, told it, and ended on a high note with at best specific episodes that draw criticism. Well known and respected, but not nearly as much as spongebob(or at least, that’s what i think).
 
Maybe there is some credence to the saying ‘competence kills’.

Granted, the Simpsons’ canon wasn’t always consistent anyways, (like Dr. Marvin Monroe just disappearing, and such) and other beloved cartoons are guilty of that too.  
Even shorter-lived animated sitcom shows like “King of the Hill” have controdicted their own continuity before too. (Most glaring being Peggy’s Mother goes from being a nagging old middle-class housewife mother, to becoming a rather tough, strict tomboy-ish, deadpan Montana farmer.)

They had the same motivations. Artistic.
 
The first Spongebob movie was made because Hillenburg wanted a nice finale to his show (and Nick wanted money). The Last Airbender was made because Shyamalan was a fan of the cartoon and wanted to do his own take on it (and Nick wanted money).
 
The difference is Shyamalan is a hack.

As for the King of the Hill example, I’m not an expert there, but I heard Mike Judge quit being the show runner and the show became more loose after that.

I think Mike Judge was still a li’l involved actually, especially considering he voices Hank Hill himself.  
Judge is considering on bringing back the series, I hear.
 
It’s actually a shame the “Beavis & Butthead” revival years back didn’t last long, as it was surprisingly very good, wasn’t overdone, and such.
