At this point, this thing almost seems like concept art made in the early days of the movie designs. It’s pretty crude compared to what they went with:

The alledged redesigns are for the movie.

I like it. But, I’m gonna miss the original design.

Something to fix: In the actual cardboard standee, you can see that the light reflections in Twilight’s eyes have little blue outlines around them. In this image, they’re flat white.

Not a bad redesign but it may be a shock going from the style of the show to this new style for the movie.

Thank you for doing this breakdown and analysis - the extra strokes along with the shading really makes me curious to see how they’ll handle this in the movie. In a lot of ways, the original show designs were all about making it as easy as possible to crank out the shows with minimum tweaking because a character turned or because of a change in camera angle.
 
I think that adding all these extras, plus having an indication of light sources, will help make the movie pop on the big screen, but … now I feel like I’m going to end up watching sight lines and shadows for the whole movie just to figure out what they’re doing with the puppets :)

Well this vector is based off of a picture from Tara Strong next to a cardboard cutout of Twilight, which was slanted away from the camera a bit.

It just looks……. Off?  
the face looks weird, but this may just be an early design.

Looking at the changes, they’re good, but I copied the image into MS Paint and stretched it out just a tiny bit more, and in my opinion, looked a little bit better. No big deal, though.

I know that. I know that this is a vector from a cardboard cutout, but I think it should be readjusted to account for the fact that the cardboard was at an angle from the camera taking a picture of it.

On the original you can see the side of the cut-out board plain as day.

“May be vertically stretched”? Uh, yeah! It’s totally turned at an angle. Twilight is not shaped like that.

These redesigns aren’t really that drastic. They look like the original models, just more detailed.

If they are doing redesigns, whether for the movie or the new animation studio regardless, the drama will likely be a repeat of the Equestria Girls designs (though not to quite as epic of proportions). People will complain until we actually see how good the models look in motion

So this mane design… it looks rather rustic, returning to the G1 roots. However, this is only for the movie.

I think it looks cute, but it may take some getting used to.

The swuared-off muzzle is partly an artefact of how the cut-out in the photo was turned at an angle to the camera.
