I agree. I understand why this show needed 9 seasons from a financial perspective. New episodes, new characters, etc. But it’s at the cost of changing little tiny things that affected the quality of the show.
I think out of the 222 episodes FiM has, there’s only 80 episodes that are well worth watching today, and only 30 of these 80 have aged well.
FiM needed a continuity editor. The original plan was for two and a half seasons (the magic 65 episodes for syndication) and call it a wrap. Those ended up being less than a third of the shows total run.
And you know what? This convinced me. It’s really hard to empathize to Starlight when she constantly does things like this.
I think I’m not as annoyed as I was many years ago because:
I still like the show, but I can’t pretend to be blind at this type of narrative problems.
Uh, no. It was shut down for completely valid reasons.
Yeah, while she gave some help in the end, ironically, she wasn’t in the episode much. Though, sometimes her haters call her a “Spotlight-stealing Mary-Sue” if she so much as makes a one-line-of-dialogue cameo in an episode…
…I wish I was exaggerating, but literally that actually happened with a few episodes on the “We hate Starlight, she has cooties” club on FiMFiction. People actually lost their schmitz over her just merely appearing in an episode briefly, an episode she did basically nothing in.
I think that’s when the hatred over a fictional pink horse is going ovverboard.
Seriously, the Starlight-hatred got so unbearable for me, I stopped hating her myself, and decided to give her another chance. Overall I’ve enjoyed her, even if she isn’t perfect, nor my favorite character at all. I especially, enjoy her being a foil for Twilight, Trixie, or Maude.
Edited
one thing I do find funny about the starlight hate one of the episode she get some shit for is the cutie remark and I would argue the problem was that episode is that she wasn’t actually in it that much
Ironically, somebody told me they were sick of Twilight, and did want Sunset to replace her.
And yeah, rumors that got out of hand, that caused panic in the fandom are nothing new. Remember that “Fluttershy becomes an alicorn” rumor?
I loved M.A. Larson’s response to that.
I’m remember when we first saw was sunsets toy before even knowing what Equestria girls was and people was theorising that she was going to replace Twilight and I don’t mean like how she technically did with Equestria girls. New main character and new mane 6 it’s just a broken record
You have a point.
As I’ve been around the fandom sense the Season 1 days, I remember Sunset got almost as much hate as Starlight did before the first EqG movie even aired. Ironically, many Starlight-haters are Sunset-fans, and some are actually jealous that Starlight got to be a supporting character in MLP:FiM, instead of Sunset. (Though, they forget that meanwhile, Sunset basically gets to be a main character in the EqG series, more then most of the Humane Six are usually, so it’s not like she’s forgotten.)
Besides, if Sunset was featured as a regular in the main Pony show back in 2013, (instead of regulated to EqG) and Starlight never existed, I’m sure instead it’d be Sunset getting all the controversy instead.
I remember some didn’t like sunset until Rainbow rocks and then she became a fan favorite.
I saw people saying starlight should have been retconwhich would happen annoying in two ways as it would have been lazy on the shows part and also fans keep complaining about retcons that don’t exist
Very few villains get killed in MLP, especially pony ones.
Y’know, I used to dislike Starlight, but even back then I didn’t want her dead. And I agree, her hatedom goes overboard sometimes, that’s probably what contributed to me giving her another chance.
It’s just I’m a Starlight fan.
But after hearing the haters continuing to complain about Starlight even to this date with some even straight up insulting people, who like her.
It all gets to the point when I feel almost ashamed for liking her
and getting curious if during Cutie Re-Mark Twilight killed Starlight would have the series gone in a better direction - If the fans just pushed the writers into right direction.
I actually don’t think that would have been the case. The thing I like about Starlight and her little friendship circle is how antithetical it is from the Mane Six and how it utilizes characters that have gotten more screentime than before Starlight’s introduction into the main cast; Trixie, Maud Pie, the Changelings, even the Princesses to some extent. In addition, the Mane Six have kinda wrapped up a lot of the important bits of their character arcs to the point where the focus could really be utilized better with some other characters.
Let’s burn everything!

Nothing against Sunset, but as you point out, it’s actually very ironic that many Starlight-haters are Sunset-fans.
They basically hate Starlight for the same reasons they love Sunset. (Much like my original point in previous comments I made here.)
Nobody complained about Sunset’s reformation, but ironically before that, she used to get almost as much hatred as Starlight does. Alot of fans forget how hated “Equestria Girls” used to be, and Sunset used to get hate merely on association with that series.
I hate to sound biased, but honestly both characters are quite similar, but I kinda prefer Starlight, (not a huge fanboy of her, or anything) because she retains most of her character flaws, while Sunset hardly has any, or any hints of her old personality ever sense getting blasted by rainbows, and being converted to friendship. (Aside from her temper, but even that hardly ever comes up.)
I think most fans only accept/like Sunset more, and her reformation better, because she had more repracussions for her actions, and had a whole movie making her act cute/sad, regretful, and ostricized, while the only reprocussion Starlight had was pissing off Miss Cake/Applejack, and being afraid to return to her old town, and such.
So fans tend to feel Starlight didn’t have to “work” as hard for her redemption, but like Sunset it’s been shown through a montage, and through a whole season she had to gradually learn to overcome her control issues, and like Sunset was forced into a situation where she had to help save the day, and such. So it wasn’t exactly easy for her either.
Frankly, both characters had very swift reformations IMO, but at least they both wanted to improve themselves, save the day cementing their heel-face-turns, and such.

Ready the party cannons. But fill the cannons with fireballs.
@tigerwaffle936
“I’m sorry. I don’t know the first thing about friendship.”
not even a minute after that, and Sunset was easily forgiven by the people she tried to kill.
@PonyPon
get over it. Sunset’s never gonna be in FIM. that ship never sailed.
P.S.: your bile against Starlight is also long overdue.
@Alexlayer
yeah, isn’t it amazing how people forget they’re inherently flawed? :D
@FurriesandFlurries
Yeah, Starlight isn’t the only character who tends to “overreact,” and frankly that’s not really a personality flaw you can just easily “get over.”
Especially, IRL.
Wow, pretentious much? The fact that you’ve been in there fandom for 9 years does not make your opinions more valid.
>she makes the same mistake
read again.
She’s not the only character prone to overreacting, you know. Twilight is especially known for that nowadays.
Besides, the events in A Royal Problem and School Daze can hardly be considered mistakes because A. Starlight HAD tried to make a peaceful resolution between Tia and Luna before they went at each other’s throats and B. Starlight made the right call in motivating Twilight into reopening the school under HER rules, not the rules of the stuck-up EEA.

Well said.
