These are some development concepts for a My Little Pony G5 2D show pitch done in 2019 at Boulder Media, before the project was placed on hold.

For what it’s worth, I know of some people who were actually turned off by the lack of variety in body structure among the Mane 6 in G4, hence why they didn’t become fans, while liking G5 better in comparison for its greater variety. (Let’s also not forget Faust wanted more variety but just didn’t want to overwork the animators.)

Certainly strong actual personalities can overcome the lackluster visual cues, and strong visual cues can’t overcome bland personalities, but let’s not pretend it’s irrelevant.

I can understand that, but I feel like a more neutral approach would get the message down across easier without stepping on people’s toes. I get his reasoning that different body shapes does add more to a character and makes them more unique instead of doing copy and paste, and I agree. Also, I don’t know if he knew about this, but there was also the fact that G4 was made using Flash which meant that assets could be reused with no problem which explains why the character models looked so similar. I don’t blame him for not knowing that if that is the case.

All in all, I believe that body type and character personality aren’t mutually exclusive.

I’m also trying to respond to this without being passive aggressive, so I hope it doesn’t come off that way. I think Naccari does understand that. However, Naccari is a 2D character designer for Tell Your Tale, so he’s not going to be talking about the acting in his art portfolio since he didn’t work on any of that part of the production. He’s going to be talking about the the parts he actually worked on and can use as reference work, which were the 2D designs and how that conveys the personality.

I guess Claudio Naccari never realized that the most important thing about a character is their actual personality and characterization regardless of their body type and appearance. The G4 designs were all cookie cutter yes, but behind those designs were well rounded and deep characters which led to a big Internet phenomenon and the reason why we’re all even here in this website to begin with. While I’m glad that G5 is making different designs and shapes to make them unique, but if they don’t have the characters to back it up, then who cares?

I like both G4 and G5 and I hate comparing them both and I don’t like how passive aggressive this post is.

I mean, it’s not wrong. When doing the visual design of characters, different body shapes is a big way to make the designs individually distinctive. And yes, FIM’s creative choice to make all the ponies have the same basic body type, whether it was done to reduce the budget since you could reuse assets, or to keep the show designs more in line with the toy designs, or to put the focus of the distinction elsewhere like highlighting the cutie marks more, or to have a more unified style across the show, or whatever other reason they had for it, it did have the effect of reducing the visual distinctiveness of the characters in some places.

It’s also why you see a lot of fan artists use different body types for the Mane Six in their own styles, to help differentiate the characters from each other more. It’s just a stylistic choice. And that’s the reason why concept design presentations like this exist, to explain the move to a different style and what the elements of that style can bring to the table including things that maybe weren’t present before or to express things in a new way. It’s certainly not an attack on FIM or saying FIM was bad.

Hasbro - we’re full of shit as usual. I am pretty sure I can distinguish them by their EYES alone. Body shape is just a singular thing of the many differences they share. Also, why make them all pony in the first place? It’s because you need your characters to be similar to one another to some extent to be able to connect to each other(without really convoluted plot lines) and as a result, to the audiencealso probably had something to do with them being Equine.

G5 is not even worth mentioning, the very definition of a “corporate show”. Such a nonsensical plot line, I don’t think anything they will do is going to fix it. But I digress, it was always about money.

Hard agree, even if they remove the individual physical appearances, I can still tell by how they act. Heck, I believe Rainbow Dash was doing an impression of her own friends and I still can tell it’s RD herself.

If I have to be neutral, it’s more of a case of Identify before they act or Identify after they act.

This reeks of when you think you have figured out some really cool concept or idea but you never actually test or analyze it, so you end up THINKING you’ve hit the mark when in reality you make a fool out of yourself and everybody questions what you’re attempting. That is to say, it seems like empty speak without much to tangibly back it up. The g4 statements are true, but the fact of the matter is you’re not viewing characters without their manes, tails, colors, or cutie marks EVER. I understand the design principle of unique silhouettes, but the rationale for why the g4 bodies are ‘lacking’ is off.

Diversity absolutely helps depict a character’s personality and is an essential component of character design. But what do these body shapes depict? I genuinely can’t read anything from their poses and body types, besides perhaps a vague feeling of Hitch being ‘strong’. Zipp sort of looks… elegant? But that’s supposed to be Pipp’s idea. Seriously.

It also does not adequately differentiate the species. Sunny looks like a pegasus bodytype. Izzy looks like an earth pony.

As other users have mentioned this is intentionally painting g4 in an unfavorable light for the sake of comparison to prop up their approach with g5. They place the g4 show puppet assets in stock, identical poses while the g5 ponies are from what seems to be promotional or concept art of some kind and don’t entirely resemble how they look in action.

All it’s really saying is character designs can help get across characterization, which I don’t think is a crazy take.

It’s like they’re flat-out admitting that tbey know the writing for G5 is shit, so they have to come up with some bullshit. Because it’s not the strong writing that helps characterize the individual personalities of the characters, it’s body shape.
