Someone needs to call me out on this if I missed something but I think there’s a piece in the Bible about not going “I’m better than you” etc etc, (about being humble.) Like superiority is how all the religious hatewars start and whatnot like anyone on Call of Duty saying “lol im better thn u, u gt (deleted) n ur throte lolololol”

Yeah. I’m not normally very vocal about this, but it just dredges up an old annoyance of mine when I see the kinds of arguments on here.

To be honest, I want us to stop making excuses for religion and get rid of it because I also want to get rid of “being an atheist”. I want to get rid of both of them because religion is just this stagnant pond of outdated thoughts and reasons coupled with a fatalistic security blanket part of culture, and atheism (as it exists in flesh and blood, not the pure dictionary definition of merely lacking a belief in god(s)) is a polarized reaction to that which tends to throw the baby out with the bath water for fear of seeming too religious, and they’re both holding us back.

For clarification, I would consider myself an atheist but I think capital ‘A’ Atheism is polarized from religion in the sense that people still utilize the religious metaphysical idea of there being a magical world and this opposing cold, hard, deterministic, and fatalistic universe and then cut out the magical world part. They’re still living in that religious world, just minus all of the good parts rather than starting from scratch and trying to look at the universe with fresh eyes. I mean, look at how generally dismissive of the problem of consciousness they are because they want to shoehorn us into this model of a bag of DNA with a computer programmed to reproduce.

Makes sense.

Still, I would probably be an atheist if it weren’t for the fact that it’s apparently a legal requirement in my state to shove religion down people’s throats at every opportunity, which considering how much of a worrywot I am, have sowed seeds of doubt forever implanted in my mind.

I hate having these kinds of mental hangups and knowing exactly why I have them even though I can’t do crap about it.

@RighteousIndignayshun
I was more lazily addressing a bunch of people using you as a jumping off point. That’s mostly what I do nowadays where I’m bothered just enough to want to say something but not enough to get long winded and express a thorough argument.

I know this is old, but if religion wasn’t already a thing, you wouldn’t view atheists as some assholes. These apologetics are things none of you would EVER apply to any other bullshit people made up without evidence if it was created in the modern era, but because this stuff is thousands of years old you stumble over yourselves trying to excuse it.

And your responses end up boiling down to “kek fedoras”

Ever read a book called Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein? Basically he’s espousing the beliefs of the Church of All Worlds, which is founded in the novel by the book’s protagonist, Valentine Michael Smith. Smith was raised by Martians since infancy. The word “grok” literally means “to drink” in the Martian language but figuratively means “to understand something so completely you almost become one with it.” There actually is a real life Church of All Worlds that was inspired by the novel, though it leans more towards neo-paganism rather than anything resembling that UFO cult known as Scientology. If anything the hippie counterculture movement was the most heavily influenced by the book, with hippies showing up at Heinlein’s doorstep to offer “oblations to his altar”, much to his chagrin.

No one is incapable of grokking. They just subconsciously or voluntarily refuse to grok in fullness. However, waiting always fills. In time even you may grok the fullness of everything if you so choose.

Personally I’m more into the Church of All Worlds.

Its like english. They’re all english words. They’re arranged in something vaguely resembling a sentence and even starts out semi-coherent. But then it goes all word salad.

If I got this as it’s really meant Biblically, nowhere in Jesus Christ’s words does he say “Piss and moan and stick it up a tailpipe when discussing me, acting holier than thou”, so well… If it’s in well intended learning without lying involved (even if the one asking doesn’t really get it at first) what you saw can happen.
