As long as it isn’t like Shadow the Hedgehog, where their idea of being “dark and edgy” was having Shadow run around (mostly) dull environments and throw out a “damn” every other sentence, then yeah, I wouldn’t mind seeing more kid-friendly franchises do that.
Hell, Sonic Frontiers basically does just that, and I loved it.

I don’t mind that either. Sometimes saving the world takes a little more than a wisecrack and a devil-may-care attitude. But a lot of creators seem to struggle to find the right amount of grit.

Idea for a edgy kid friendly game.
MC, 14yo: “Damn. No milk in the fridge for my breakfast cereal”
Dad, 37yo: “Alright you wait here I’ll get the milk and some other stuff.”
MC: “It’s alright, dad. Wouldn’t want you getting lost again. I’ll buy the milk this time”
Quest updated: Buy Milk from the Store.
There’s an actual maze between your house and the store.

If you think about it, Team Fortress 2 is the embodiment of anti-edginess.
On paper, a game about mercenaries killing each other in a war made by two shady companies would be in a typical grimdark fanfic a dour affair filled with dread.
Then you actually see the lore and play the game and you can tell that none of it takes itself seriously, the mercs are so utterly hilariously sociopathic in their quotes, their characters are ridiculous and amusing, the violence still manages to be rather cartoonish and over the top, the CEO’s for the companies are so utterly insane it only works because the whole world as a whole is just as insane, and the fact respawn is canon or at least semi-canon means the mercs are by this point legitimelly uncapable of take even their own pain seriously (“Oh that smarts.” when gibbed for example). Which is why at it’s time it stood out from other more traditional FPS’s.

Time to get spooky
When it comes to Digimon World games, I say go with Digimon World Re:Digitize: Decode if you want the better story, or Digimon World: Next Order for a more new-player experience.

If there’s one thing Metal Gear loves to do more than long-ass cutscenes philosophizing on the horrors of wars and nukes, it’s retconing the original NES games into something far grander than they appear.
The Venom Snake twist being one of them. Most people would just let you Big Boss coming back to life in the second game stand, Kojima makes a big budget game 20 years later saying that no, you really did kill “Big Boss” in the first game but it was just a body double.

Rather than face off against the same enemies again and again or try to fight bosses I’m not prepared for, I decided to just take off across the world and I had a pretty good time.
I practiced horseback combat until I can usually evade damage. The speed the horse gives makes a huge difference. I couldn’t approach the bridge on foot to Weeping Peninsula because of the ballista. On Torrent I just charged it fast enough to avoid their fire and attacked the bridge from the other side. I beat a demi-human queen by weaving in and out of the ruined walls to avoid her magic attacks. I encountered a golem in front of a castle shooting a giant bow and I made my approach charging behind ruins until I was too close for it to shoot, then just hacked at its legs. That was surprisingly easy.
I still think Elden Ring is needlessly punishing and obtuse. But I appreciate that the open world gives the opportunity to approach challenges at your own pace. I wouldn’t still be playing if I didn’t like it.

Kinda weird that I can’t stand the Real Time Tactics genre, yet XCOM and its derivatives are among my favorites.

You might have a better time with the older Souls games. Elden Ring is pretty punishing even with a lot of levelling. I’d recommend starting with Dark Souls 1, it’s not nearly as punishing and honestly the new games got harder as they went on, DS1 has it’s fair share of bullshit, I can tell you, but it’s still more fair than DS2 and DS3, DS3 is more polished and mostly well put together. But the overall experience is more difficult, especially bosses. If you like depressing medieval worlds, DS1 might be up your alley, especially if you’re enjoying the world of Elden RIng, it’s still got that ruined kingdom aesthetic that DS1 does.

Unpopular opinion, but I actually liked the Shadow game. My only beef with it, was it just didn’t feel like it was finished being bug tested, but it wasn’t the worst “Sonic” game to me, and it’s a shame it didn’t do well, because the backlash over it lead to them scrapping Tails & Knuckles focused games.
Originally, the game was going to be T-rated, and have more swearing, (so if you think there was too much already…) and be more violent with red blood from the alien beasts. So originally the game was going to be even edgier.
The “edge” was dialed back, because Sega wanted to take advantage of the new (at the time) ESRB E-10 rating.
