I wouldn’t consider this season to be incredibly amazing so far, but we are off to a great start. Even season 5 had a sort of rocky beginning. There isn’t really a single episode so far this season that I didn’t enjoy, or just flat out bad. Each one had certain aspects about it that I can find somewhat enjoyable on a second watch through. The one that comes closest is Rock Solid Friendship, but I still found a lot of the Maud/Starlight moments enjoyable.

If this streak keeps up, this season could be up there.

I really liked this episode.
Background Pony enjoyed episode. Pink Pony have way of making even simple story amusing.

Soooo… the Aesop of this episode was “always help others even when they explicitly ask you not to”?
Sure, OK, let’s go with that.
Well that’s probably one way of looking at it. At one point (since I tend to overthink things) I started to wonder if this is more of a story about cultural norms and the difficulties involved in working with groups that don’t share your way of thinking. After all, it’s not that the yaks don’t appreciate help given to them. It just seems to be deeply against their cultural identity to ask for it. That’s probably why Pinkie’s decision to take unilateral action actually ends up endearing her to Prince Rutherford. Either he respects her strength for helping despite his refusal to ask, or he appreciates that she did it without pushing them to compromise what it is that makes them yaks.

Admittedly it still seems like kind of a dumb trait to have, considering that refusing help might have meant starvation or them all freezing to death, but the concept of cultural respect can be a very tricky thing to deal with in real life. No reason it can’t be equally troublesome here.

Alright, now that the mid-season finale has aired, it’s time to rank the episodes so far, and give your thoughts on the season as a whole.
So, how is it?
I couldn’t possibly rank the episodes yet, but as for the season… honestly? I’ve really liked it so far. The only episodes to really fall into my own personal “it was ok” category were “Honest Apple” and “Fluttershy Leans In”, and even with those two I don’t see them as bad or anything. Just simple, fairly solid episodes.

Aside from that we’ve had Twilight actually doing stuff and having adorable freak out moments again, Starlight finally evening out her redemption arc and showing she can be more than a mind controlling former villain, Celestia having actual screen-time and being a character, additional world-building, additional family interactions, and a host of fun moments. If this continues, I’ll certainly be hyped for a season 8 and I’ll probably put it up there as one of my favorite seasons the show has had.

It’s been good, I think. It’s still having the same problems Season 6 had; good ideas for story, morals, and character growth but all too often poorly delivered. That said, I’d never accuse it of not being entertaining, I’d be glad to watch almost all of them again.

Pretty average season, but not bad. Weakest season (so far), IMO.

Because that’s who I am.
That’s who I’ve always been.
People here don’t remember me from the old days, but I do.
I don’t like you. I don’t like anybody. And I will do anything I can to make sure I entertain myself, even if it means going through other people.

That’s an interesting view to me because both of those I can see, but it’s not the message I got. I saw it more as a somewhat ham-handed, “It shows you really care when you help your friends without having to be asked first.”

I suppose the cultural thing came to my mind because I know it’s a criticism that has occasionally popped up in the past when they’ve done a “ponies interacting with other sapient species/non-ponies” episode. And it actually does do a surprisingly good job of portraying the difficulties with problem solving when you have to work with a group that has a different set of values than you. I mean I’d be hard pressed to say that was their intention all along, but still… it kind of fits if it was.

But again, I do tend to overthink these things.

Nice to see Twahlaht Sparkul’s buhlewn again.

Pinkie was genuinely enjoyable, which is not something I can often say. Not that I hate Pinkie but she can easily be overwhelming.

The episode was… ok? It was obvious the whole time that Pinkie’s friends were going to come in and quickly fix everything and the pacing is slow to delay that conclusion. It was decent enough though, and the yaks got some characterization other than “Not perfect! Yaks destroy!”

I think it’s probably a unicorn spell.

I still ascribe to the belief that top tier unicorns are probably objectively the best, but on a countrywide scale Earth ponies are greatly needed because of efficiency. Twilight is a brokenly powerful unicorn, but the vast majority of unicorns can’t do what she does, so Earth ponies are needed because they can ALL grow stuff.

Even as early as season 1 Twi was circumventing the unique traits oft he other races by casting a spell that lets ponies walk on clouds.
