The poncho, sombrero and mariachi band are the most distinct and memorable part of Mexican culture. Some cultures have nothing special to truly latch unto and makes them non contenders.
Culture becoming degraded due to consumerism is a dull argument, because the commercialization is only using what is already there and any product that uses it will rarely if ever supplant the original idea it was based on. You can’t sell a product with a national flag in it unless people already believed in what it symbolizes and the loose associations with it. For holidays such as Christmas, there is something to be said about the corruption of consumerism, but if Christmas had no presents and time off work, I doubt people would be as excited for it as a holiday to begin with. A tradition that has nothing to offer is forgotten or becomes a remote niche, which is the alternative that isn’t all that much better.
Commercialization of culture has existed since Rome. There is nothing special about it other than the advent of mass media and the emergence of a wealthy middle class worth catering to, historically speaking.
