The great GamerGate discussion. (Stuff and things)

It’s funny how both Notch and Pewdiepie are from Sweden and are few of the most outspoken persons speaking against the media narratives being peddled.

It is as if they know what it is like to live in a overtly PC culture that you can’t say anything against, unless you have enough fuck you money to compensate.

I don’t really see what’s wrong with her tweets I mean mexican culture has been degraded to such a stereotype in media and she even says there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the game, she just’s tired of this cultural degradation

@PonyPon
She even says she is excited for the game

The problem is that Mexicans are ultimately defined in the media by their stereotypes
Culture is degraded and consumerized by the culture industry

To fix this, well, Rebecca even gives her liberal solution for it, just be mindful of other cultures in your life
Though I disagree(heavily), I’ll just leave it at that

The poncho, sombrero and mariachi band are the most distinct and memorable part of Mexican culture. Some cultures have nothing special to truly latch unto and makes them non contenders.

Culture becoming degraded due to consumerism is a dull argument, because the commercialization is only using what is already there and any product that uses it will rarely if ever supplant the original idea it was based on. You can’t sell a product with a national flag in it unless people already believed in what it symbolizes and the loose associations with it. For holidays such as Christmas, there is something to be said about the corruption of consumerism, but if Christmas had no presents and time off work, I doubt people would be as excited for it as a holiday to begin with. A tradition that has nothing to offer is forgotten or becomes a remote niche, which is the alternative that isn’t all that much better.

Commercialization of culture has existed since Rome. There is nothing special about it other than the advent of mass media and the emergence of a wealthy middle class worth catering to, historically speaking.

I’m not going to expand any further because I will have to go into Frankfurt School territory and I don’t think the Mods would like that but let’s just say when your culture becomes consumerized, many aspects of your culture disappear as the most outlandish and most appealing to the lowest common denominator(I.e they start appealing to people who aren’t even part of your culture) start taking over in the media and many things once held sacred or had a good feeling to them start getting commodified
I mean, in Japan, KFC is associated with Christmas
I’ll leave it at that

@Cyborg_pony
Again, consumerism
Turkeynomster

@Cyborg_pony
Mostly because of tourism I’d think, which could be argued is a sign of the evils of capitalism that offers cheap memorabilia that you don’t have to buy if you don’t want to. I haven’t exactly researched how commonly the attire is used there by its citizens, currently.

Likely it isn’t anymore offensive than buying a Hawaiian Hula-doll, unless it is intentionally used to smear Mexicans as a demographic.
Turkeynomster

@Commune
Fair enough.

I’d still add that people only have jurisdiction to preserve their national and unique culture within their own borders and such responsibility can not be enforced unto others, unless you want to become an isolationist nation. Policing how other people disseminate cultural icons outside the nation is a foolhardy task and the commodification of culture is more due to globalism and the post-modern individualization of cultural preferences than capitalism. You’d have to make specific examples for me to consider it an issue, because right now, it’s too vague and truist for me to think capitalism is the main force responsible for it.

Speaking of cultural appropriation, the UN has some preliminary plans to make it illegal world wide. They’re basically trying to advocate for expanding intellectual property (language, cultural expressions, genetic material) laws in multiple countries to cover indigenous people’s rights not to have their intellectual property showcased in media or exhibitions without asking them first; who has the right to grant this privilege unto someone from any given culture will probably be figured out later on. In other words, all video games would become pure and white stories with only a few cultures present to prevent law suits, which I guess is something some people would be cheerful about. That or for some reason the law will only be applied haphazardly towards only a few select demographics.

I am only glad that the UN is a bureaucratic money funneling scam that has no authority to demand anything.

Heatstreet and Huffington Post articles about it to cover some basis.
