I do like the touch with the fangs. Traditional sirens were man-eaters, after all.

I’m leaning towards Hippocampi because plenty of Equestria’s bestiary usually stems from Greek mythology (i.e Minotaur, Griffon, Cerberus, Hydra)

I don’t know a lot about hippocampi (though now that you reminded me, I do see the similarity); and I thought that kelpies were simply Celtic water monsters that look like horses and drown and eat children?

I just saw this (warning, spoiler!) and I am glad they actually showed the Dazzlings in their ‘true’ forms. I honestly thought they wouldn’t, and they surprised me with some cool monsters.
 
Though I wonder why water creatures have hooves on their forelimbs – my own fannish take is that they were originally back around the time of the Three Tribes and were each a different tribe of pony (unicorn, pegasus, Earth pony) who used their songs and voices to keep the Tribes at each others’ throats for their own amusement and power. Then they get cursed to go and live as monsters in the ocean ‘where no one will hear your songs’. Of course they found ways to torment ponies anyway.

9/26/2014 (Before the Rainbow Rocks theater): Guys, I have a head cannon that I’m think it not a spoiler for you. And is that, perhaps the Dazzlings are formerly rare ponies with transparent wings before Sunset Shimmer travel through the mirror portal. They’re outcasts singing mares that (I think) they later stumbled upon three magical red ruby necklaces that whomever wear it, control it and feed off anypony argument for food. Since it’s Equestrian magic, they made everypony’s harmony fell apart and later will transform into (I think) either three kelpies or hippocampi to made everypony in Equestria and the princesses bow to them. I don’t know what place to think where the Dazzlings control the ponies, but perhaps Star Swirl the Bearded (not Princess Celestia) banished them to the mirror portal (not knowing it’s a human world) where the Dazzlings continued to feed off hate in a cafe whenever they’re hungry but they didn’t turn into kelpies or hippocampi because “the energy of this world isn’t the same as in Equestria”.

Once you see them…
