Fanon Style Hippogriffs and Classical-G4 Style Hippogriffs

Same as DNE, I now support a classical hippogriff, and a whatever Cirrus comes up with tag, all under the hippogriff tag

I’m personally in favor of just adding a ‘traditional hippogriff’ tag to the ones from the movie and OCs that fall in the same group. Worked with Unicorn/Traditional Unicorn, it could work here just as well.

I would argue that the canon one is generally the default if you wanna go with just 1 tag.
 
Notice Unicorn refers to the show style unicorn.
 
Plus its also the case that there are hippogriffs that dont presently fit either definition, and not tagging equigriffs such would mix those in too, even of you search hippogriff, -classical hippogriff

The difference here is that the fanon designs were here several years before it was made canonical in the show. Thus it would be reversed; “classical” referring to the show style which resembles how they are traditionally depicted.

I still dont understand why there is resistance to adding an additional tag to fanon hippogriffs. They will still be tagged hippogriff, they’re not losing that. Clarity is always a good thing.

And speaking of changing longstanding tags, the Futa tag, which has had a longstanding definition recently got updated to exclude male herms, for a very small number of users. I remember watching that discussion because the prime complaintant talked about it in my IRC channel.  
So derpibooru does make modifications of long standing tags for accuracies sake.
 
There also used to be a longstanding policy of not tagging default species, because that seemed ‘obvious’ but now that too is a tagging thing for clarities sake regardless.

Look at a closer example with Seapony (g4), and how original Sea Ponies existed since 1984ish, and movie Seaponies and G1 Sea Ponies don’t look even slightly alike, so a separate tag for them makes sense. Likewise making a tag for movie style hippogriffs makes more sense.

I mean, I think you’ll have the same issue with ocs of that sort that you have now with these ones for kicking them off the hippogriff tag. But here I’m suggesting basically the same thing you are, just leaving both types under the same hippogriff supertag.

This is not actually true.  
But, If you wanna talk about who existed first and who has seniority, the first page or 2 of hippogriffs are of the classical form, including, iirc, their most prevalent one, silver quill. Cirrus and his brethren actually commandeered the tag.

In fact, both silver quill and rainbow feather preceded Cirus, the first of his kind, by a year.

I wouldn’t be against adding ‘Traditional hippogriff’ + ‘hippogriff’ to show characters and OC’s which follow canonical hippogriff ‘standards’, and ‘hippogriff’ + [new tag that is anything but griffling] to Cirrus-like OC’s for clarity’s sake.
 
On that note we should be looking at this as if the ‘griffling’ tag never existed, because your argument of “Sure, it’d take more effort at this point, because one’s already done.” is stupid considering the only reason one is ‘already done’ was because you steamrolled the hippogriff tag with barely any authorization before anyone who actually cared about the hippogriff tag had any say.
 
Was there even anyone else who wanted a separate tag that badly? Just you and like 2 or maybe 3 more? I’ve heard 0 arguments about the desperate need for clarification up until this point. I feel the community would have been a lot more understanding and willing to help out if you had not tried to completely ignore their existence.

Okay, so ignoring the mistakes from parties in the past with being too eager, the only thing that I am seeing at this point against adding new sub tags is to not use griffling, but something else.

I think that any goodwill surrounding this debate was probably ruined by you mass editing peoples’ tags for them before this conversation began. I don’t think there’s really that much widespread support for this change, and honestly it’s kind of redundant. I’ve already seen a few artists getting upset about having had this happen, and the passion with which you’re vehemently defending this idea at this point is just bizarre. Like, imagine being this passionate about a tag on derpibooru of all places.

And then we would need to have a large enough consensus on what name to call them. Overall, it just seems largely irrelevant to make several sub categories. I believe Leak said it best:

You know, if you want effective change, you shouldn’t go around doing it by diving straight into the deep-end (AKA mass-changing all the tags).
 
They say Rome ain’t built in a day, and the same can be applied here. I think the whole idea of using ‘hippogriff / classical hippogriff’ is a good start to eventual change of the tags. It’s more comfortable for everyone involved to ease into something still familiar, yet not entirely the same too.
 
It’s like how you change a river over years of time naturally via tiny ripples and shifts until that river starts flowing in a different path. No one really notices the change, but it happens still.
 
You’re wanting that river to move immediately, so you blew up the river (mass-change of tags), which grabbed everyone’s attention.

Alright, I’m sorry, I shouldnt have done it that way.
 
That being said, how many of yall would have shown up here at all without that in the first place? It’d have probably been pretty onesided, so maybe this is for the better in the end. ^^

There is some truth to that… Even bad publicity is still publicity… But then again, it’s still bad publicity.
 
Try to find a middle ground with everyone else if you want to get that river moved. Cause it’s better to go with the flow than forcibly against it.

As Silver said, bad publicity isn’t the best way to bring attention to something like this.
